Founder & director

I’ve spent over 30 years working with business owners, and I started MAC X to build the kind of accountancy practice I believe businesses actually need.

Founder and Director of MAC X Accounting

I’m the founder of MAC X Accounting, a relationship-led accountancy practice built for owner-managed and family-run businesses that want more than a once-a-year conversation.

Over the years, I’ve worked with businesses of all shapes and sizes, from local owner-managed companies through to larger organisations across the Midlands and beyond. What I’ve always enjoyed most is getting to know the people behind the business, understanding what they are trying to build and helping them make sense of the decisions in front of them.

For me, good accountancy is not just about preparing accounts, filing tax returns or meeting deadlines. Those things matter, but they should be the starting point. The real value comes from understanding the business properly, asking better questions and helping owners move forward with more confidence.

I didn’t want to build just another accountancy practice

MAC X was created because I could see a clear gap in the market.

After years working within larger accountancy firms, including time as a Regional Managing Partner within a top 10 accountancy firm, I saw a lot of owner-managed businesses looking for something more personal, more practical and easier to work with.

They did not want to feel like another name on a list, or only hear from their accountant when the accounts were due. They wanted key people they could trust, people who understood their business, took an interest and could help them make better decisions throughout the year.

That became the starting point for MAC X.

Only hearing from your accountant once a year

The work might get done, but if the advice comes too late to be useful, something is missing.

Being passed around

No one wants to explain the same background every time they call. Business owners want people who know them and know the business.

Getting numbers without context

Accounts tell you what happened, but they should also start a better conversation about what needs to happen next.

Advice that feels reactive

Business moves quickly. Decisions around cash flow, tax, staff, systems and growth need support throughout the year.

Outgrowing the old relationship

As a business grows or changes, the support around it needs to grow too. What worked in the early days might not be enough anymore.

Wanting someone on your side

Running a business can feel lonely. The right accountant should feel like someone alongside you, helping you think clearly and move forward.

That is the gap I wanted MAC X to fill: accountancy that feels personal, practical and useful all year round.

My career and business journey

Over 30 years in accountancy

I’ve spent over 30 years working with business owners, from local owner-managed companies through to larger organisations across the Midlands and beyond.

Top 10 firm experience

Before founding MAC X, I worked as a Regional Managing Partner within a top 10 accountancy firm and have also built and grown a successful practice from the ground up. That experience gave me a clear view of what businesses need from their accountant, but also where traditional accountancy can sometimes fall short.

First-hand business experience

Now, as a business owner myself, I understand the decisions clients are making every day. Building a team, managing growth, investing in systems, backing yourself and trying to build something with proper foundations all bring a different kind of pressure.

Practical advice that makes sense

That perspective shapes the way I work with clients. The advice has to be practical, honest and useful, with no unnecessary jargon or overcomplicating things.

How I work with business owners

My approach is shaped by one simple belief: business owners should feel supported, understood and able to ask the questions that matter.

The technical work has to be right. Accounts, tax, VAT and deadlines all need to be handled properly. But good accountancy goes further than that. It is about building trust, having proper conversations and helping business owners make decisions with more confidence.

Straight-talking advice

Advice should be clear, honest and easy to understand. You should never feel like you were expected to already know the answer.

Same side of the table

The best conversations happen when we are working towards the same thing. I want clients to feel like I am alongside them, not just presenting the accounts and disappearing.

More than compliance

Accounts, tax, VAT and deadlines matter, but they are the baseline. The real value comes from understanding what the numbers mean and what needs to happen next.

Better questions

Sometimes the most useful advice starts with a question you had not thought to ask yet. That is often where the best conversations begin.

Long-term relationships

The more I understand the business, the people and the goals behind it, the more useful the advice becomes. That is why relationships sit at the centre of MAC X.

This is the kind of accountancy I want business owners to experience. Practical, personal and focused on helping the business move forward, not just looking back at what has already happened.

What still motivates me

I’ve always believed people deal with people.

Qualifications matter, experience matters and the technical work has to be right, but relationships matter just as much.

MAC X was not created simply to build another accountancy practice. It was created to build a business where clients feel supported, where the team enjoys coming to work, and where we are genuinely invested in helping businesses achieve their goals.

For me, good accountancy is about understanding the business, asking the right questions and helping people make decisions with more confidence. That is what still motivates me every day.
